Board Game of Guesses

"What Ya Say?" is a fast-paced party board game designed to challenge communication skills in a fun and lighthearted way. Players must guess phrases while their teammate mouths the words silently — encouraging connection, quick thinking, and lots of laughter. This self-initiated project merges product design, branding, and visual storytelling to create a complete tabletop experience from concept to prototype.

DESIGNING

The visual identity for What Ya Say? was built around the energy of the game itself — fast, bold, and expressive. I designed a playful logo that reflects both communication and miscommunication, using distorted type elements to hint at the central mechanic of mouthing and guessing. A bold color palette, custom illustrations, and dynamic typography were used to create a cohesive and instantly recognizable brand.

Packaging design was approached with a user-first mindset — ensuring that the box, card layout, and instructions were not only visually compelling but also easy to navigate during gameplay. The visual system extends across every component of the game, creating a strong and consistent product identity.

DEVELOPMENT

This project was developed independently from ideation to presentation. Once the core rules were refined, I focused on content creation — designing game cards, player materials, and instruction guides. Each element was sketched, digitized, and tested visually for consistency and clarity.

Mockups were created in Blender & Adobe Photoshop. Every visual decision supported gameplay clarity while maintaining a modern and engaging aesthetic.

PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

One of the main challenges was explaining the game mechanics in a way that felt intuitive for first-time players. To solve this, I created clear, icon-based instructions and kept the layout simple and easy to follow. Another challenge was balancing playful, bold visuals with functional design — I addressed this by using a limited color palette, structured typography, and consistent spacing. Playtesting also revealed areas of confusion during gameplay, which I refined through iteration and user feedback to improve overall clarity and flow.
